What would you say if I told you that this forever love does exist, and it is the story that you find yourself in? It is not just a fairy tale, but is real, and is the undercurrent of existence? You won’t find it in Hollywood, or on a dating website, you can only find it in the Bible? Listen to what Ephesians 1:4-5 says.
“[E]ven as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will.”
Think about this. Before you were born, before Adam and Eve were born, before the Earth was born, God picked who would be recipients of His love. In forever past, God chose who would be adopted into His family through Jesus. This was not a general choice, but a specific choice. The verse says “us.” In the immediate context this at least means Paul and the Christians in Ephesus, but it is true for all who are predestined to believe in Christ. We believe in Jesus because God chose us in him before the foundation of the world, it was our destiny. This is wild, but this is what the verse says. He does this, not in accordance to our will, but in accordance to His will. It is His sovereign decision who lives with Him forever.
Christian, take a moment and ponder this as it relates to your specific eternity. What an amazing gift that God has provided to those whom He chose. It is love in its purest of forms. No strings attached, just God being God and making us His…from forever to forever.
The doctrine of God's forever love is more commonly called Unconditional Election, and it is one of the five points of Calvinism. For those who do not know what Calvinism is, Charles Spurgeon defines it as the Gospel. I would define it as Sovereign Love.
As I spend more time dwelling on the immeasurable riches of God’s Grace, not just in general, but as it relates to me specifically, I find myself overwhelmed. God has given me everything in Christ, not because I deserve it, but because of his Sovereign and Forever Love for me. The deeper I mine the Mountain of God’s Sovereignty, the greater the treasures I find, and upon each discovery my heart flutters.
I have a God who has loved me forever. These are the sweetest words that my ears could ever hear. They are words that change everything. Believing these words change how I love my wife, how I love my kids, how I spend my free time, how I spend my money...everything. They are the words that compel me forward to sing, dance, proclaim, testify, and die for Him, the one who has loved me forever. These words wash over me and sanctify me, making me more and more like Christ.
These words are words that every Christian must hear. It is imperative. They are not words that we should keep for the backroom of academia. These words are what God has given pastors to preach and disciples to teach. I refuse to sit back and keep the sweetest words ever to be uttered to be hidden from my brothers and sisters in Christ. Let us do what we are called to do, and shout God's Forever Love from the mountains.
“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” – 1 Peter 2:9
