Since the beginning of civilizations, there has been an ongoing declaration of war against God. Whether it be ancient Egypt, the Roman Empire, Stalin's Russia, or the current situation concerning ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham). These groups have one singular goal, to obtain authority and control over land and over people. The strategy is always the same, murder.
When these groups rise up, they leave a wake of disaster. There are no rules to their hate. Their goal is their god and they reach for it no matter the cost. Having said this, they are never successful. Egypt is a the bottom of the Red Sea, Rome was conquered, Stalin is dead, and ISIS will soon become a distant memory. After ISIS, another anti-God group will arise and they will have the same goal and the same result.
Why does this seemingly perpetual cycle continue? Because the world is full of sinners, and God is full of Sovereignty. At the core of every human is a sinful heart. At the core of God is unlimited power.
ISIS is nothing. Don't get me wrong, what they are doing is evil at its highest, and my heart breaks for those who are in the midst of their terror. However, what they are attempting to do is pathetically futile. No matter how hard they try, they will not knock the King off His throne.
Psalm 2:4-5 says, “He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision. 5 Then he will speak to them in his wrath, and terrify them in his fury, saying, 6 "As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill." 7 I will tell of the decree: The LORD said to me, "You are my Son; today I have begotten you. 8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession. 9 You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel."
God has decreed that Jesus is King. When God decrees something it is eternally settled. There is no human effort that has a chance to change the Almighty's declaration. No amount of swords, guns, suicide bombers, or even nuclear war heads can change God's orders. Therefore, everything that ISIS does is vanity. It is pointless to even try...yet they do.
Psalm 2 is a bedrock text for those who tend to watch the 24/7 news cycle and get overwhelmed by the violence against Christians. We must understand that groups who fight against God are nothing new, and their existence and aggression is not surprising to God. God is patiently waiting, and when His time come, His Son will come. This is a promise that we can live and die for.
“Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. 11 Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. 12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him. “- Psalm 2:10-12
So do not lose heart, He has overcome the World.
