There is a singular truth, and then there are distortions of that truth. The distortions come in varying degrees. Some distortions are obvious and we can immediately recognize their invalidity. Other distortions are subtle and we must look more closely. Whether obvious or subtle the distortion of the truth turns the truth into a lie.
In my opinion, Satan primarily operates in the realm of subtle. Very rarely do his attacks come directly at us with full force. His approach is more covert, more hidden. We are told in 2 Corinthians 11:14 that, “Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.” This means that Satan pretends to be good so as to lure you away from the authentic truth into a deception. The way he does this can take on different forms, but one primary way he masquerades as an angle of light is through the distortion of the Gospel. How does he do this?
First we must understand the Gospel. The Gospel means “Good News.” So what is this news and why is it good? First, let’s start with the bad news. The bad news is that we are sinners and we deserve God’s wrath. However, because God is love, He sends Jesus to save us by sending Jesus to live the sinless life that we failed to live. Jesus then takes the punishment we deserve by dyeing on the cross and absorbing the wrath of God. He takes our sin and punishment and he gives us his righteousness. He then conquers death by rising from the grave, and then offers to those who place their trust (faith, belief) in Him the gift of forgiveness and eternal life; hence why the good news is good news.
The way Satan distorts the Gospel and masquerades as an angel of light is that he takes the salvation that comes through Christ alone, and adds you back into the equation. Instead of trusting in Jesus to rescue you, Satan convinces that you also have to chip in. Satan whispers into your ear, “It can’t be that easy. You surely must to do something also.” The distortion is subtle, but it turns the freedom of the truth into a prison of lies. For you are no longer trusting in Christ, you are in fact doubting in His ability to fully rescue you. Listen to what Paul says in Galatians.
“I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel-- 7 not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed.” – Galatians 1:6-8
The people Paul was referring to in Galatians who were preaching “a different gospel” were religious people. They were people who claimed to be followers of Jesus; however, they also claimed that in addition to trusting in Jesus you had to trust in yourself and jump through religious hoops in order to be saved. Paul said to let them be accursed, this is equivalent to saying let them be damned. These are strong words. Why? Because these people were masquerading around as angles of light, and what they were preaching was strait from Hell.
Believing that Jesus’ sacrifice is not sufficient to save you equates to not being saved. It is the opposite of all the Bible teaches about trusting in Christ. When Jesus said, “it is finished” on the cross, He meant it. There is nothing you can add to the sacrifice of God dyeing for you. That is as good as it gets. The blood of God is enough to pay for your sins. God didn’t short change you, He saved you.
Sadly, many of you attend churches that do not preach or teach the true Gospel. Instead, they teach a false Gospel, and because of this many of you may never have heard the truth, and therefore you have never placed your faith in Christ alone. You have always been taught a distorted Gospel.
So what should you do? You have no other choice but to leave that Church. This should be automatic. In fact, if the true Gospel is not proclaimed then it is not a church. It is a masquerade ball. The stakes are too high for you to remain in your parent’s tradition, and why would you want to if the truth is not being proclaimed. It is time to take off the mask and become a child of the King.
