The Bible. Whether you believe it is God’s Word or not, you have to give the Bible credit for what it is and its ability to endure. The Bible is a collection of 66 different books, written by 40 different authors. It took 1500 years for the Bible to be completed. Despite its diversity in authorship and its length of formation, it is unparallel in its uniformity. These facts in and of themselves should cause you to want to respect it and read it.
Having said that, since the moment that God’s Word was uttered, it has been under attack (which I believe is more evidence of its truth). The attacks are subtle, but unfortunately for some people, persuasive. Listen to the first attack cleverly uttered by the Father of Lies, the Devil, "Did God actually say, 'You shall not eat of any tree in the garden'?" (Genesis 3:1). The assault was masked in a question and subsequently caused Adam and Eve to doubt God’s Word. This assault on God’s Word was just the first among many attacks against the Bible. However, God’s Word has stood the test of time. It has lasted through the Fall, the Flood, the rise and fall of nations, the dark ages, the age of enlightenment, the modern world, and now the post-modern world. Why? Simply because it is truth, and truth endures.
Today, like always, the Bible remains under attack. Not just from the Richard Dawkins and Bill Mahers of this world, but also in our homes, our business, our schools, our churches, and our hearts. The mud that is thrown today is the same mud that has been thrown since the beginning.
At the heart of the attack is pride; the pride of believing that our knowledge is superior to God’s. I am amazed by how many times I am in a religious conversation where they other party uses everything but the Bible to state their position. They use their feelings, they use PBS, they use Oprah, they even use the latest Spielberg movie to make their point, and they laugh at the notion of using the Bible to find answers.
In Isaiah 40:2 we see God stating that His Word will stand forever. He is telling us that nothing will ever be able to knock down the Bible: not Pharaoh, not the Philistines, not the Assyrians, not the Babylonians, not the Pharisees, not Cesar, not Muhammad, not the enlightenment, not Marx, not Nietzshe, not Dawkins, not liberalism, not post-modernism, not Hollywood…nothing will. Despite punch after punch by these people or movements, the Bible will not fall. The Bible is like the Rocky of books. At the end of time, when the bell rings, God’s Word will still be standing and all of its opponents will have passed away. The pride of their positions will end in their destruction.
With this said, I pray that before the bell rings and Christ returns, the veil that has blinded the eyes of the rebellious would be lifted and they would humble themselves and surrender to the immovable and unshakable Sovereign God and His life giving Word.
