It is common in American weddings to have 1 Corinthians 13 read. You know the verse, “Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends…” Due to its frequent use at weddings, people assume that this text is written for two people who have “fallen in love.” The unfortunate thing is that a large number of people who use this verse in their wedding fall out of love. So wait, I thought love never ends? Is the Bible wrong?
No, the Bible is not wrong, we are wrong. Our culture misunderstands what love is and where it comes from. It has been twisted and distorted to a point that it is unrecognizable from its original form. Here is what love is:
“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.” - 1 John 4:7-8
First, this verse tells us what love is…God is love. Not that God HAS love, but that God IS love. Second, it tells us that God is the source of love. If you want it, you must go to Him. Third, it tells us to tap into this source of love, you must be born again (repent and accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior). The love 1 Corinthians 13 is talking about is this kind of love, a “1 John 4” type of love, a real love, a God love. The love that many weddings (not all) are trying to celebrate is not a God love, but a man’s love.
And this is the problem, love that comes from man, is broken, in fact it is not even love…it is evil. Genesis 6:5 says, “The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” Sure, at times we may be able to fake love, but the bottom line is that if we rely on man’s love, we will be vastly disappointed. Man’s love always fails.
If you want a real, lasting, unending love; a love that 1 Corinthians 13 is talking about, you can only find it from its source, God. And to receive that kind of love into your life, you must accept Jesus Christ as your King and Savior. If you are tired of the dark, broken, fake love of the world, let go of it and grab hold of Jesus today. If you do so, you will be filled with the love that we see in 1 Corinthians 13, an unfailing love.
