Do you hate your job? Are you unhappy at your current place of employment? Do you look at career builder once a week? Are you counting the days until your retirement? A vast majority of our adult life is consumed by working, yet we tend to dread it,. It is a burden to us. This is sad, because most of life revolves around work, therefore most of life is a burden.
For those who are followers of Christ, we should not feel this way, yet we do. Why? Because we fail to view our jobs through the Gospel lens. When Christ redeemed us, he also redeemed our work.
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” - Ephesians 2:10
When we are created in Christ Jesus (saved, born again, converted) we are saved in the midst of our circumstances. We are not saved in a vacuum. We are saved as parents, spouses, employees, mangers, aunts, uncles, neighbors, etc. And God understands this. In fact, not only does He understand this, but He orchestrates it. For immediately upon our adoption, God incorporates us into the family business of salvation. He instantly commissions us to be used as a means of grace to those whom we interact with.
Therefore, your circumstances are not meaningless, but are an assignment from God for the purposes of God. What is amazing is that this assignment has been waiting for you. These people have been waiting for you. No longer is life mundane and burdensome, but it holds a new and exciting eternal weight. Each day is not routine, but an opportunity to be about the Lord’s work and spread the joy that we now have in Christ.
In the Lord ’s Prayer we are to pray, “Your Kingdom come, your will be done.” The way God’s Kingdom spreads is through you and me. We are to take the Gospel message to those who have not heard it or accepted it. And this understanding changes our approach to Monday mornings. For the reason you work at McDonalds is not primarily to flip burgers, but primarily to spread the Gospel.
As followers of Jesus, we must approach every circumstance in this light. Our circumstances are not meaningless, but they are purposeful assignments, prepared beforehand for us to walk in them. So lets get walking!
